Jim Bowlby, Chief Operating Officer

Jim Bowlby is a scientist and entrepreneur with over 30 years of practical business and scientific experience. He holds several patents in direct to paper electrophotography, improved DNA base calling, and non-linear CCD circuits. In addition, he has filed dozens of provisional patents on differential display, electrophoresis, mRNA expression, automated sample preparation, and computational haplotyping.

Mr. Bowlby held senior engineering and technical positions in Silicon Valley startups before joining Ricoh Corporation as the R&D Manager, where he developed their first 600 dpi laser printer. Leaving Ricoh to start his own company, he developed an efficient and low cost slide scanner and sold the company to Microtek.

Later Mr. Bowlby started Bowlby Labs and invented a new electroprinting technology with 1200 dpi resolution. At XRS he discovered an electronic circuit to give CCDs the same wide dynamic range available to photomultiplier tubes. At Applied Biosystems he ran the algorithm group and was responsible for improving DNA base calling using a wide variety of advanced mathematics. At Woodside Technology he developed an array based DNA amplification system. At Vita Genomics he experimented with advanced haplotyping techniques to mine the Celera database for disease genes prevalent in Asian populations.
